About MRG

MRG is a self taught stencil and collage artist from the streets of Liverpool who's passion is for monochrome stencil portraits and the odd tribute spins offs tipping a baseball cap to the pop art world.

So what got you started?

"I started to get back in to art to help me get more brain active after a few head injuries, the odd viral meningitis and to help me unwind with stress and cope with my depression. It wasn't meant to be anything at all it all just sort of developed along the way. Some people liked some stuff so I continued and if they didn't I wasn't arsed I didn't start doing it for them"

Why MRG?

"I wanted something about me and when big, unusually handsome and modest was already taken I went for Mr Ginger (just random like). It sounded OK but as with other artists once you start typing stuff into things or tagging work its easier to shorten the name than spend the extra time writing so Mr Ginger became MRG!"

MRG has been known to create anonymous one off street art pieces and enjoys producing work for random #freeartfridays  (#faf) which he posts on his media channels with photographs for location hints.

How did the #faf all come about?

"FreeArtFriday (#faf) was an idea that I saw online by an artist that I admire and follow called @mydogsighs (go check him out http://mydogsighs.co.uk/). I took his format and used it to promote art within my own city of Liverpool and other cities I visit while working or travelling. The whole #freeartfriday is world wide with thousands of artists contributing each week. The process of actually leaving a piece of my art on the street that's taken me hours/days to create gives you a great sense of excitement, wellbeing and liberation. Knowing that someone will eventually pick it up and take it home and maybe even put it on their wall is a buzz. Maybe they see it everyday as they walk past and it gives them a smile to me that's class. I have actually sat to one side and watched as someone goes to look and pick up the free art. It's funny but most people walk past, notice, take a look, read it's free art and then carry on their way. I think people are embarrassed to take something that states "FREE" in case there's a catch. Either that or they really don't like my art! Either way it does make me laugh"

MRG tries to get around the constantly growing street art festival scenes meeting up with fellow artists and also painting along side them too with recent festivals in Cheltenham and Chester.

So what's the attraction to these festivals?

"It's a great way to meet up with fellow artists, some you know, most you haven't met and some, just maybe some of them are a bit like idols too? It also allows you time to take in the amazing talent and variations of artist and art that is actually out there. It gives people a chance to meet artists, ask questions about their art and find the reason and meaning behind their work. There's a world wide gallery alive living, changing, breathing on the streets, its all around you and its all free , you just need to take time away from the norm to look and find it....so take your head out of your phone and go look"

Most of MRG's work is through word of mouth or recommendation led commissions but it is now time to move further and onwards and approach the online machine.
